Practice Inclusion
Embrace Diversity
Diversity means composed of differing elements or qualities. Diversity includes our inherent qualities, our life experiences, and the choices that have shaped our world view and perspective.
When applying the term diversity to people, it refers to the fact that while groups of people can, and often do, share characteristics that make them appear similar, each person is a separate, unique being, that is not the same as anyone else.

To embrace diversity is to cherish the distinctiveness of each person. It requires a desire and curiosity to learn about peoples’ stories – especially ones that are radically different than your own. In addition, embracing diversity requires: valuing authenticity; demonstrating empathy; reflectively listening; and identifying, acknowledging and challenging your own biases.

The goal of embracing diversity is to experience the richness and complexity of life through your relationship with others.
Inclusion is simply the act or state of being included within a group or structure.
Practicing Inclusion refers to the act of ensuring that all people are invited to, and can participate in, something (i.e. an event, a meeting, a team, a system, etc.).
The conditions under which the invitation is extended, and environment in which the participation is to occur, must support and encourage that individual in a way that results in him/her feeling valued and respected.

Practicing inclusion requires: leading courageously; embracing diversity; exercising compassion; creating and maintaining environments in which all people feel valued and respected; creating and adapting systems (i.e. a collection of processes, practices, policies, structures, etc.) to ensure accessibility and equal treatment for all; and, identifying and addressing any situation in which exclusion is occurring.

The goal of practicing inclusion is to create an environment in which the diversity of all people is leveraged in a way that makes them feel valued and respected, and leads to greater positive outcomes for the individual, team and organization.
