Are we building the world we want?

I love the question Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg is asking in his Building Global Community manifesto today. "Are we building the world we all want?" Will we focus on expansion and inclusion or react with fear and contract and isolate? We certainly see the latter as fear seems to have gripped some driving them to create walls of isolation. Mark’s post today imagines a world where people are given the power to share and make the world more open and connected. Education disrupts fear. In my studies Open Educational Resources (OER) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) are hot trends in ed-tech with enormous promise. The idea of creating an educational resource (video, webinar, game, etc.) and giving it an open license so others can use it, remix, and reimagine the content makes my heart smile. Generosity in action. Innovation, the possible reaction. The more I read about the impact of OER the more excited I get about the possibilities. Everyone cannot afford to go to school. With OER the curriculum is free! Sounds great, however, it is accessed via the internet. 60% of the world has no access to the internet. When I finish this Masters in May I plan to enroll in a MOOC. Good for me, however, I know a lot of people who cannot afford the cost of internet in their home right here in America. Can you imagine how many people in other places like Africa, India, or Oceania can’t afford internet? How about there is no internet! Mark has put his money where his mouth is and started internet.org. A think tank to create ways to expand the infrastructure and reimagine delivery of the internet! Globalization won’t be choked by fear when we remember we are all part of the human family and connected. With the same needs of personal, emotional, and spiritual fulfillment no matter what our outer costume look likes.
